Tongkat ali refers to a herb native to several parts of Asia like Indonesia, Vietnam, and others. Usage of the herb dates back thousands of year ahead of modern time. Based on research, tongkat ali appears to have some potential benefits. Continue reading below for details.
1. Improve Mental Health
Some research indicates that tongkat ali extract root may be useful in boosting mood. In one study from 2013, researchers tested the effects of tongkat ali on part of 63 male and female participants with moderate stress.
The participants were supplemented with tongkat ali extract for four weeks. Researchers noted improvements in anger, tension, and confusion with reduction in level of cortisol, a stress hormone.
2. Benefit Sexual Health
Tongkat ali is widely used in terms of sexual health. It has long been thought that the plant can help improve testosterone as well as erectile dysfunction.
Promising results are shown in one study which featured male participants with late-onset hypogonadism, a condition defined as failure of the testicles to produce enough testosterone. The participants were supplemented a 200 mg dosage of tongkat ali extract every day for a month. Taking the extract helped significantly improve testosterone levels.
In a separate medical review from 2015, supplementation with TA extract is mentioned to have improved erectile function in several studies.
An older study shows that usage of TA extract enhance libido in male rats with sexual experience.
3. Help Fight Bacterial Infection
In some studies, TA is noted to have anti-bacterial properties. In one study, the stem, leaves, and root of tongkat ali were all tested for effects against bacterial strains. The leaves were exhibited counteractive effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Serratia marscesens.
4. Fight Against Cancer
It is shown that tongkat ali may be beneficial against cancer. In an assessment from 2012, TA extract blocked a significant amount of advancement from human lung cancer cells. In addition, it inhibited activity from lung cancer cell tumor markers.
In a 2014 review, TA is mentioned to have shown anti-cancer effects in assessment of the plant on human breast cancer cells.
In an earlier review, it is reported that TA had a significant cytotoxic effect on several cancer cell lines.
5. Support Muscle Strength
It is suggested that increasing testosterone can promote muscle building. Thus, TA may help increase muscle strength. In a study of 25 physically active male and female senior participants, TA extract increased testosterone levels, thus increasing muscle force.
In a 2014 review, it is mentioned of a study in which a daily 100 mg dosage of TA extract increased muscle strength, muscle mass, and fat free mass.
6. Ease Inflammation
Several studies indicate that TA has anti-inflammatory properties. In one study featuring mice with paw edema, 400 mg/kg dosage of TA extract helped ease pain and inflammation.
In a 2016 assessment, a β-carboline alkaloid extracted from TA exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in RAW264.7 cells.
